District Courts

There are one or more Maine District Courts in each county served by 36 judges. District Courts have limited jurisdiction and cannot prosecute felony charges, with the exception of initial appearances and bond hearings. Most DUI driving under the influence and OUI operating under the influence cases are misdemeanors and can be heard in District Court.

However, criminal cases heard in a United States District Court are not eligible for jury trials. There is a very limited time to request a jury trial and have the case moved to a Maine Superior Court.

In some counties, the District and Superior Courts have been unified into one court to hear different types of criminal cases.

Below is a complete list of Maine’s District Courts grouped by county. To determine which court will hear your OUI case, look on your ticket or bail papers that the jail gave you upon being released. On one of the many papers you were handed, look for the name and address of the court where you must appear to face your criminal charge and enter of plea of guilty or not guilty. Other forms you received upon your release include a personal property release form, and a vehicle impound form.
